Glasgow 'cooking oil' spill at east end junctions could have been malicious fears biker

A motorcyclist has raised concerns that cooking oil could have been spilled over two busy road junctions 'maliciously' to injure the public.

Alex Martin noticed that the junctions on McFarlane Street and Bain Street near the Barrowlands were covered in the slippery substance on Sunday morning.

The 42-year-old said cyclists and pedestrians were struggling to cross the road because the surface was like 'sheer ice'.

Glasgow City Council closed the road between East Campbell Street and Barrack Street until it was 'made safe for vehicles' earlier this afternoon.

Police were also called to the scene to divert traffic away from the areas in question.

Alex told Glasgow Live: "I knew it was cooking oil because it didn't have that rainbow finish that it would if it was petrol or something similar.

"It was just on the red brick area, not on the pavement which makes me think someone has done it maliciously. The firefighters said the same thing.

"They said that someone might have tipped it into the bin but it had clearly been drenched all over the road. It was like sheer ice.

"I was here on my motorbike yesterday and if I had gone over it it would be horrific.

"While I was there, there was a cyclist that nearly fell and elderly people struggling to get across it.

"It's really dangerous so I just really hope no one gets hurt."

Alex shared a video pointing out where the oil had been left in a bid to prevent any potential accidents.

The road has since been made safe and reopened to the public.
