Glasgow cocktail bar inspired by island of Majorca to open at popular coffee shop

The team behind a popular Glasgow coffee shop in the west end has begun a new venture, with a cocktail bar inspired by the Mediterranean island of Majorca.

Founders of Hinba Coffee Roasters, Fergus McCoss and Ness Achilles, are aiming to bring over some of the relaxed after-hours atmosphere they picked up while living in Palma. The new watering hole, Eight Six, is housed within their existing coffee shop on Dumbarton Road.

Open from 6pm until midnight every Wednesday to Sunday, the cocktail spot has a menu carefully crafted by an expert mixologist Iain Welsh from the nearby bar Eighty Eight - while giving a nod to the daytime coffee offerings. Fergus and Ness launched their first business in 2019, with a cafe in Oban.

Earlier this year, the pair launched Hinba on Dumbarton Road. Before moving to Scotland, they lived in Palma for five years and hope to bring a touch of Spanish influence to Partick.

Pistachio Sour, Champagne Spritz and the Spiced Paloma are just three of the nine exotic drinks on offer at the bar.

Fergus said: “Most of the coffee shops in Palma turn into bars at night. The transition was always seamless - the relaxed daytime atmosphere really helped set the tone for a chilled night.

“I knew it was a concept I wanted to bring to Hinba. I think it will be really well received, especially in the west end.

“We’re the only venue in the area to be offering a coffee-to-cocktail experience like this - we want to be a place that people can enjoy at any time of the day.

“Partick is regenerating and we want to be at the heart of that. Having the support from our friends at Eighty Eight has been amazing.

“From the minute we opened Hinba in April, the team next door have wanted to help in any way they can.

“Their expertise is priceless, and we’re really excited to be working with Iain to offer a cocktail menu that reflects us.

“Ness and I were inspired to venture into the world of coffee and hospitality because of the sense of community it creates. We want to share that ambition with the people who live on our doorstep, and Eighty Six is the perfect place to watch that grow.”

The 30-capacity bar is now open now for walk-ins and bookings, and you can find out more here.
