There were many unfair accusations levelled at Steve Clarke by snipers who were clearly unimpressed with the Euro 2020, Euro 2024 and World Cup ’26 qualifications, the promotion to Nations League top tier and the epic wins over Israel, Serbia, Austria, Denmark, Spain and Norway during his reign as Scotland manager.
But the allegation that Clarke was not a fan of Billy Gilmour and was holding the national team back by refusing to start or even play the diminutive but classy Napoli midfielder was perhaps the most ridiculous of the lot.
