The New York Giants have sniffed around quarterback prospects this offseason, most notably conducting a top-30 visit with Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker.
News of Hooker’s visit spread like wildfire and led to some rather hyperbolic speculation. It caused many to wonder aloud what, if anything, it meant for Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor.
General manager Joe Schoen was asked about that during his pre-draft press conference on Thursday and he immediately shut down any notion that it was anything other than due diligence.
“I would just say right now we are happy with Tyrod. Tyrod is the backup. I think we are in good shape right there,” Schoen said.
Still, the Giants do have a need at quarterback. There are just two listed on the current roster after Davis Webb retired from playing and took a coaching job with the Denver Broncos in February.
“We had Davis Webb last year. We’ll continue to look whether it’s a veteran free agent or somebody in the draft or post-draft, whoever it may be. Yeah, we’ll have three quarterbacks in camp,” Schoen said.
Taylor has one year remaining on his current contract and is likely headed to free agency next season, so the Giants will need to plan ahead a bit.
“You have to look at the roster, not just today but 2024, 2025, who is coming up,” Schoen said.
What that means for the quarterback position is open to interpretation, but ideally, Schoen will find someone to come in, learn the system and carry that over into the 2024 season.
