Giants’ Brian Daboll shuts down any Tom Brady-Tommy DeVito comparison

Tommy DeVito mania is in full swing and some are beginning to take the rookie’s early success to the extreme.

There are already calls for DeVito to assume the long-term starting role for the New York Giants after a handful of games, but even that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

On Tuesday, during Brian Daboll’s regularly scheduled Zoom conference, the Giants’ head coach was forced to cut off a line of questioning about DeVito and how his early success relates to that of Tom Brady in 2001 when the second-year player took over in New England.

“We’re four games in. I do appreciate the question,” Daboll said, cutting off the reporter.

The question posed did come with a preface: “This is probably going to make you cringe a little bit.”

It did.

“I would just say every situation is different. I couldn’t probably give you the answer that you’re looking for. I think we were 1-3, something like that,” Daboll said of when Brady took over for Drew Bledsoe. “I couldn’t give you a tangible story or anything like that. It was a different time, different players, different team, but obviously, it is well documented. We’re just trying to make a first down and execute in the red zone right now and do a good job with our responsibilities with where we’re at.”

Although the reporter stressed that he wasn’t looking for a Brady comparison, Daboll simply wouldn’t allow the conversation to continue. It was very similar to the way Bill Belichick reacts when asked to compare modern players to the legendary Lawrence Taylor.

While the whole Tommy DeVito wave is fun and Giants fans should ride it out with joy, perhaps it’s time to pump the brakes just a tiny bit on all of this outlandish long-term legendary status speculation.
