Gerard Pique is fully focused on recovering from injury in time for the start of Barcelona's pre-season following the news of his split with singer Shakira.
Pique and Shakira announced their separation earlier on Saturday as the Colombian singer, 45, confirmed that she is no longer with the defender following an 11-year relationship and two children together. A statement read: "We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding."
In the wake of the news, it has been reported that Pique hopes to return to full fitness in time for pre-season in July as he continues his rehabilitation from the injury that ended his season early, according to Mundo Deportivo. Pique, who remains under contract at the Nou Camp until the summer of 2024, missed the final weeks of the season after suffering a thigh injury against Mallorca.
Pique, 35, and Shakira had been together since 2011, with the pair having met while filming the music video for her 2010 World Cup song Waka Waka the previous year. The couple have two sons together, Milan and Sasha.
The Barcelona defender was allegedly caught in bed with another woman. It has been reported that the couple have been living separately for a few weeks after Pique was kicked out of their family home. According to Spanish outlet El Periodico, he has been staying in a bachelor pad and has been living a "party lifestyle" since the split.
Further reports claim the Spain international has been going to nightclubs with team-mate Riqui Puig and his group of friends, often returning home as late as two or three in the morning.
Pique was hampered with injuries last season with his latest setback coming against Mallorca as the World Cup winner lasted just 28 minutes of the Liga clash before having to be replaced by Eric Garcia. Xavi provided an update on his injury at the time, saying: “Pique is in pain. He’s trying to come back.
“Pique was feeling good before the match. He started very well, but then he felt discomfort and asked for a substitution. I thank Gerard for his leadership. The team needs him, when he plays we feel more secure.”
Pique would miss the rest of the season casting doubt on whether he would return in time for the new campaign, but it seems he is on course to be ready for the start of pre-season in early July.
