Georgia OT Amarius Mims withdraws from transfer portal

Georgia Bulldogs offensive tackle Amarius Mims is expected to withdraw his name from the NCAA transfer portal. Mims, a former five-star recruit, was one of the top available transfers in the country, but elected to return to Athens.

The Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles were two of the top programs in the hunt for Mims.

Amarius Mims is from Bleckley County in Cochran, Georgia. The 6-foot-7, 330-pound sophomore is projected to be Georgia’s top backup offensive tackle behind left tackle Broderick Jones and right tackle Warren McClendon. Mims has the potential to win the starting job at one of those positions or could shift inside to guard.

Mims’ return is a big win for Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searles. It is rare for a college football team’s offensive line to go through the season completely healthy. Mims could easily be called upon to start a key game.

For example, last season Georgia’s starting offensive guard, Tate Ratledge, suffered a season-ending injury in the opener against Clemson. A similar injury this year would force a shift along the offensive front.

Mims played in eight games for the Bulldogs during his freshman season in 2021. He gives Georgia a powerful extra offensive tackle and ensures Georgia’s future at the position is bright.

Kirby Smart got Broderick Jones to wait for two years before being a hero and doing a stellar job blocking the nation’s sack leader, Will Anderson, in the national championship game. Now, Mims will see if his patience pays off.
