Dallas County Records First West Nile Death of 2026 as Officials Warn Cooler Weather Has Not Ended Threat

A Dallas County man in his 60s has died of West Nile virus, the county's first death from the mosquito-borne illness this year. Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) said Oct. 7 that the man had underlying medical conditions and was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease, the more serious form of the illness.

The county has now confirmed six human cases and 192 positive mosquito traps in 2026, according to the DCHHS announcement of the death. Officials said they would not release more details to protect the man's identity.
