August was born a few short weeks before the sad death of his great-grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
On the surface, it would appear that Princess Eugenie chose to follow the trend set by her elder cousins, such as Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, of giving her child a unique and unconventional name - but it couldn’t be further from the truth as August’s name is littered with royal links.
In an Instagram story post to introduce their son, the royal wrote: "On his grandfather's birthday weekend, thinking of my grandfather, we are introducing our little boy. He is named after his great-grandfather and both of his great x5 grandfathers."

The name August was one of the names of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert. He was christened as Franz Albert August Karl Emanuel. His second middle name of Philip is a clear nod to Eugenie’s close bond to her late grandfather, The Duke of Edinburgh.
Another potential royal link is to Prince Augustus, Duke of Sussex - an eccentric son of King George III and favourite uncle of Queen Victoria.
The numerous links to Queen Victoria are unsurprising, given Eugenie’s mother, Sarah's profound interest in the Queen’s life and history. Her interest runs so deep that she named her two daughters after her.
Princess Beatrice was the name of the Queen’s youngest daughter and all three of Princess Eugenie’s names (Eugenie Victoria Helena) follow the same trend.
Eugenie was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria (she later became Queen Eugenie of Spain) and Helena was another of the Queen’s daughters.
As well as naming her daughters after the famous Queen, Sarah served as a producer on the 2009 film 'Young Victoria' which starred Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend.
Princess Eugenie spoke openly about her son before the Platinum Jubilee celebrations got underway last month and expressed her wish that August takes after The Queen.
In an article for The Spectator, Eugenie wrote: "I have given my life to my special little family and hope to impart even an inch of the values my grandmother has lived her life by.
"I think about my son August and what I’d like for him, what kind of world I’d like him to grow up in. And I think of my grannie and what she has stood for, for so many people and for our family during these 70 years. I’d love Augie to have her patience, her calmness and her kindness, while always being able to laugh at himself and keep a twinkle in his eye."
