Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh is tied for third after the opening round of the JTBC Classic in California. The 28-year-old went bogey-free on Thursday as she entered the clubhouse on five under par alongside South Korea’s Choi Hye-jin and Cheyenne Knight of the US.
Starting the first round on the back nine, Dryburgh got the scorecard going in the right direction at the 13th hole with her opening birdie before rolling in another at the 17th to reach the turn at two under. She improved her score with gains at the second and fifth before wrapping up a flawless first day with her fifth birdie at the eighth - her penultimate hole of the round.
Dryburgh, Choi and Knight sit two shots back from the leader Jin Young Ko of South Korea, who closed out her opening round with three consecutive birdies to take a one-shot advantage over Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen.
Ireland’s Leona Maguire, England’s Charley Hull and Northern Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow are among a group of 16 players in the hunt on three under.
