MARGAO: Expressing concern over dumping of garbage and the unhygienic conditions prevailing at the old bus stand, Margao, Goacan has called for intervention of the urban health centre, Margao.
In a letter to UHC health officer Dr Socorro Quadros, Goacan said one of the reasons for garbage being dumped here is that accident-related vehicles are also kept at this spot. Besides this, the area also has fast food kiosks and, including stalls that serve vada pav and omelette rassa pav, besides a Goa State Horticultural Corporation Limited (GSHCL) vegetable sales outlet.
The unhygienic conditions prevalent at the spot due to the abandoned vehicles and dumping of garbage pose a serious threat to public health, Goacan said.
It urged Quadros to invoke provisions of the Goa Public Health Act 1985 and Rules 1987 and issue the necessary letters for to the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and Margao Town police station to take immediate action.
In view of the World Food Safety Day to be observed on June 7, Goacan has also requested the health officer to convene a joint meeting of the MMC, Margao police, directorate of food and drug administration and GSHCL “to work out a long term plan to adopt the required SOPs for the old bus stand in terms of public health and food safety”.
