Garage DIY projects have a wonderful little bargain attached to them: a few hours of work can sometimes save a pile of money. But there is a catch, and it often hides behind the phrase “That’ll only take a minute.” Skipping a safety check before repairing a garage door, insulating a wall, using a power tool, or working around electrical equipment can turn a simple Saturday project into an expensive mess.
The tricky part involves the safety steps that feel too obvious to bother with. Checking a product for a recall, shutting off power, wearing eye protection, securing a ladder, and confirming proper ventilation do not make for thrilling home-improvement stories, but they can prevent injuries and property damage. A garage also contains an unusually eclectic collection of hazards, from heavy doors and sharp metal to gasoline, electrical equipment, heaters, ladders, and tools that can remove a fingertip faster than expected. Thankfully, many DIY jobs remain perfectly reasonable when the project matches the homeowner’s skills and the right precautions come first.
