Funeral of Lanarkshire pensioner killed in horror smash to take place this week

The funeral of a pensioner killed in a horror crash in Strathaven will take place tomorrow (Wednesday).

Family and friends of 78-year-old Donald McKillop will gather at South Lanarkshire Crematorium at 1pm to remember him and pay their respects.

Much-loved Donald was a popular and well-known face in the town and tributes poured in after his death last month.

Donald died at the scene of the accident involving a car and another male pedestrian on Lesmahagow Road around 7pm on January 3.

South Lanarkshire Council Provost, Councillor Margaret McKillop, led tributes at the time, confirming the death of her “good friend” who was “well-known to most people in the area”.

The Tudor cafe, where Donald was a regular customer, wrote: “Team Tudor, your girls and I will miss you with all our hearts. May you rest in peace.”

One person said: “I have so many fond memories of chats with Donald and he was one of the kindest men I ever knew. He will be greatly missed.”

Another said: “So sad to hear of Donald’s passing, hard to actually take in. We’ll miss him greatly and remember him fondly.”

A friend wrote: "Tomorrow we say our fond farewell to everyone's friend in Strathaven, Donald McKillop...Donald I think would not want any fuss but if you can attend to say goodbye in your own way please do."

And one woman wrote: "So strange not to see him around the town, so sad. RIP Donald."

A 67-year-old man was also taken by ambulance to University Hospital Wishaw with his injuries following the accident and a 61-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident.
