Full list of Cabinet ministers backing Boris Johnson - and those still silent

Boris Johnson's premiership is in tonight turmoil as he lost two Tory heavyweights from his Cabinet - the Chancellor and Health Secretary.

Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid this evening resigned minutes after each other, insisting they could no longer support the Prime Minister's leadership.

The pair who held two of the most powerful roles in British Government felt they could no longer hold their positions as Mr Johnson made a grovelling apology over the Chris Pincher scandal.

In a devastating letter, Mr Javid said the British people “expect integrity from their government” but voters now believed Mr Johnson’s administration was neither competent nor “acting in the national interest”.

Following suit, Mr Sunak said in a separate letter to the PM: "The public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously”.

Rishi Sunak started the year as a solid contender to succeed Boris Johnson as the next leader of the Conservative party.

But after questions were raised over his family's finances, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, his popularity quickly plummeted.

Sajid Javid has held roles in the Treasury from 2012 until he was made culture secretary in April 2014, becoming business secretary in May 2015 and housing secretary in July 2016.

His appointment as Home Secretary in April 2018 made him the first British Asian to hold one of the great offices of the state.

Mr Javid often said that he held a unique perspective on government business, having served in a number of ministerial roles.
