Friend of woman found dead in pool of blood shares her tragic last wish

The best friend of a nurse who was stabbed multiple times in the head and killed in Australia has shared her tragic final wish.

Erin Gilbert, 42, "wanted a baby more than anything" and was about to start her third round of IVF before she was tragically murdered.

Her husband Nicholas, 38, arrived home to their Merrylands unit, in Sydney's west, at about 11.30pm on Easter Sunday to find his wife sprawled on the living room floor, choking on her own blood.

He frantically tried to save her but it was too late.

Ms Gilbert's childhood best friend Shane Niquet said she had recently quit smoking to improve her chances of falling pregnant and the married pair of three years were desperately trying to have a baby.

Court documents revealed the Gilberts were struggling financially and had legal battles with two landlords over unpaid rent.

Two court orders from the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal direct the Gilberts to pay more than a total $8,850 (£4,750) in overdue rent to their landlords.

In October, the couple were evicted from another home after failing to pay $7,780 (£4,200) in rent and they were also behind more than $1,000 (£54037) on their current property.

Ms Gilbert was found dead in the most recent apartment just days after the court gave them a mandate for eviction if they did not pay.

Mr Niquet told Daily Mail Australia: "I don’t know how I’m going to go without her. I spoke to her all the time I will miss her greatly."

Mr Niquet said he and Ms Gilbert had been "inseparable" since they met in Year 7.

He remembered her as a "strong-willed person" who always had a smile on her face and "tried to find the good" in everyone.

Mr Niquet also explained Ms Gilbert was a qualified nurse and pathologist but was in-between jobs when she died.

Mr Gilbert told Nine News that he arrived home on Sunday night and kept pressing the doorbell, but his wife didn't answer so he decided she was probably asleep.

He said: "I walked through the bedroom, Erin was on her back and it looked like she was choking on blood.

"I jumped in, grabbed her arm and tried to resuscitate her.

"I just said 'Erin's dead, help me, Erin's dead'."

Mr Gilbert assisted police with their inquiries on Sunday evening and has been released without charge.

Police remain baffled by Mrs Gilbert's mysterious death and have appealed to the public to help find her killer.

"Definitely we believe something's happened on Sunday night ... when police arrived, she hadn't been passed away for long," Cumberland Police Superintendent Andrew Holland told reporters.

He continued: "Erin was at home in her unit block that evening ... we are aware that neighbours have heard her at the unit block, she's been speaking that night.

"We're just concerned somebody else may have been at the unit block with her."
