Everton's defeat by Crystal Palace was shocking and, let’s have it right, they are in trouble — major trouble.
I said prior to the game that they probably would not be too bothered about going out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage so they could just focus on their Premier League relegation battle. But just as I’m always an advocate for the fact good cup performances can get you back on track in the league, so it goes that abysmal displays in any competition can have a detrimental effect on a team as well and a 4-0 thrashing at Selhurst Park will not help.
It doesn’t matter what level you play at, if you come out of a football match having done well then you go into the next one with a bit of momentum. But if you’re on the end of a drubbing against a team who, yes, have their tails up but aren’t going to be threatening Europe anytime soon, then you really feel it as well.
