Francis Ngannou vs Ciryl Gane purses and prize money for UFC heavyweight title fight

Francis Ngannou and Ciryl Gane may not even make a million dollars between them for tonight's massive UFC heavyweight title clash.

The former training partners go head-to-head at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California in a huge pay-per-view fight to start the promotion's year.

The UFC made a soft return last weekend with a bout between Giga Chikadze and Calvin Kattar, but this is their first big numbered event with a crowd since 2022 began.

But despite being two of the biggest stars in the company, with hundreds of thousands expected to buy this weekend's show at a new US price of $75, there is a chance their collective purses don't even touch $1million.

The California State Athletic Commission does disclose fighter pay, so a more accurate number is expected after the fight, but their two collective salaries for their last fights didn't break the seven-figure mark.

For his UFC 260 title challenge against Stipe Miocic, Ngannou made a reported $580,000, while Gane's shot at the interim belt at UFC 265 netted him just $350,000.

With bonuses included for pay-per-view and sponsorships, as well as potential performance bonuses given both men's explosive styles, the payouts will likely be more than that.

But it's still a remarkably low number for two massive stars and heavyweight champions in combat sports.

For reference, Tyson Fury is claiming to the WBC that for his two most recent fights with Deontay Wilder he pocketed over $20m, with Wilder likely making a similar number.

Fury vs Wilder 3 did a reported 600,000 buys in the United States; a number with which Ngannou and Gane could compete given the intensive promotion done for the fight.

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk are reported to have been paid $13.6m and $4.1m for their title bout last year.

At a much lower level, Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley were both paid multiple millions for their PPV bout in December, despite the event reportedly flopping at the box office.

The boxers mentioned are also allowed to wear sponsors on their fight gear and ring walk attire, which Ngannou and Gane may not barring UFC-approved ones.

Paul has even come to Ngannou's defence, demanding that UFC President Dana White "pay him what he wants" in his next contract.

Ngannou has complained of his pay before, and is at odds with the UFC when it comes to his pay.

He will be forced to fight for the promotion again if he retains his belt, but has said he will refuse despite his contractual obligations.

“No, I will not fight for $500,000, $600,000 anymore,' he told ESPN earlier this month.

"I mean, it’s over. It’s over. I just did this. I took this fight for a personal reason.

"I want to make sure that regardless, even if it’s unfair, I have been wrongly treated, I can make my case to say I have completed the eight fights."

He has been calling out Fury for a crossover bout over the past number of years, and would undoubtedly make multiple millions for that fight, despite it being a much less intriguing contest.
