French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will propose its own initiative regarding the situation in Gaza following the veto of the US resolution by Russia and China at the United Nations Security Council on Friday. Macron made this statement during the European Union leaders' summit in Brussels.
Macron emphasized the need for the Security Council to take immediate action by calling for a ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian access to the region. He mentioned that France will reintroduce its draft resolution to the Security Council and collaborate with American, European, and Arab partners to reach a consensus.
France's Ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière, confirmed that France will present its own initiative to the council after voting in favor of the US proposal on Friday.
Macron's proposals include advocating for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, increasing humanitarian aid to the vulnerable population in Gaza, and demanding the unconditional release of hostages. He also warned against Israel launching a ground offensive in the city of Rafah, stating that such actions would exacerbate the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.
