Fourth member of British-Palestinian family dies after getting into difficulty at sea

  • Six-year-old Saja El-Khawas has died in hospital, becoming the fourth member of her family to lose her life after getting into difficulty in the sea at Shoreham on Tuesday.
  • Saja's 14-year-old sister Sara, her 55-year-old father Hassan El-Khawas, and her 37-year-old mother Zeina Alayn all died earlier in the week following the tragic incident.
  • Sussex Police stated that after reviewing CCTV footage and initial witness accounts, the deaths of the family, who had travelled from London for a swim, are being treated as a tragic accident with no third-party involvement.
  • The Palestinian embassy confirmed that Hassan El-Khawas was a refugee from the Rashidieh Camp in Lebanon, with tributes paid by the Palestinian Forum in Britain and Sara's school in Ealing.
  • Following the tragedy, public warnings have been renewed regarding the dangers of open water swimming, highlighting how cold water temperatures can shock swimmers even during warm weather.
