Former Texans RB Rex Burkhead retires from NFL

Rex Burkhead, who spent his final two years in the league with the Houston Texans, announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday.

He played for 10 years in the NFL with the Texans, the Cincinnati Bengals and the New England Patriots.

“I look forward to the next chapter in my life,” Burkhead wrote, “whatever that may be.”

Burkhead rushed 148 times for 507 yards in three touchdowns for the Texans from 2021 to 2022. He also caught 62 passes for 390 yards and one touchdown during that span. Burkhead finished his NFL career with 488 career carries for 1,908 yards and 17 touchdowns with 192 receptions for 1,534 yards and nine touchdowns.

He mostly played as a backup and pass-catching running back during his time with the Bengals and Patriots but developed into a reliable role player for multiple offenses. Burkhead joined the Texans’ three-back committee alongside Mark Ingram and David Johnson. He played backup to Dameon Pierce in 2022 during the rookie’s sensational start.
