Former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll tipped for shock Premier League return

Former Newcastle United number nine Andy Carroll is reportedly being lined up for a shock Premier League return with Wolves. The striker has been without a club since leaving West Brom, but is said to be under consideration as a free agent alternative to Diego Costa at Molineux.

Bruno Lage's side are in the market for a frontman after summer signing Sasa Kaladjzic suffered an injury on his debut. The former Stuttgart forward felt a pain in his knee during the victory over Southampton on Saturday, and scans later revealed the 25-year-old had sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Wolves agreed a deal for Costa as a replacement for Kaladzjic, but the former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea striker has so far been denied a work permit. The club are set to appeal the Home Office ruling, but have identified Carroll as an alternative according to the Daily Telegraph.

Carroll left the Hawthorns this summer after netting three goals in 15 appearances under former Magpies boss Steve Bruce. The 33-year-old joined the Baggies on a short-term contract from fellow Championship side Reading in January.

Carroll enjoyed two spells on Tyneside, with his first stint coming to an abrupt end with his infamous £35 million move to Liverpool in January 2011. The academy graduate returned on a free transfer eight years later, but scored just once in the Premier League from 37 appearances.
