Forget doing 10,000 steps a day — experts say this is what you need to do instead

  • A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that walking at a faster pace can provide health benefits equal to taking longer, more leisurely walks .
  • Researchers found that taking at least 80 steps per minute while covering under 5,000 daily steps reduces mortality risk similarly to taking 5,000 to 7,500 steps at 60 steps per minute.
  • Maintaining a brisk pace for at least 30 minutes a day was linked to a progressively lower risk of death for individuals accumulating fewer than 7,500 steps daily.
  • Logging between 7,500 and 10,000 steps per day offered the lowest overall risk of early death from any cause or cardiovascular disease , regardless of walking speed.
  • Health experts noted the findings provide an encouraging message for people who struggle to find time for long walks, demonstrating that shorter, quicker strolls are still beneficial.
