It's pre-dawn in the North Queensland community of Charters Towers and the distinctive chatter of flying foxes fills the air.
Tens of thousands of bats are roosting at Lissner Park in the centre of town and their presence is causing angst.
"[Children] can't play out in the yard. You can't put clothes on the line," said Charters Towers Regional Council's mayor Frank Beveridge.
