First picture of young BMW driver killed in fatal A82 crash as family 'devastated by loss'

Police have named a 25-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman who were killed in a horrific smash on a Highland road last week.

Jamie Sykes and Eileen Gow were both pronounced dead at the scene following the smash at around 7.35pm on the A82 near Achnabobane, by Spean Bridge, on Thursday August 18. Police are continuing to make enquiries into the cause of the crash, which closed the road for eight hours while investigators examined the scene.

Both hailed from the Lochaber area, and statements have been released on behalf of their families by Police Scotland. An image of Jamie was also released by police on Wednesday.

In a statement, Eileen's family said: "The family are devastated and heartbroken at the loss of their lovely sister and a loving partner. We would ask we are given privacy as we try to come to terms with our loss.”

Jamie's family said: "His family have released the following statement: “We are devastated by the loss of our only son Jamie and would ask for privacy at this terrible time as we attempt to come to terms with the devastating impact this has had on us and all those who loved him.”

Traffic cops are still appealing for information relating to the incident, including dashcam footage that could contain vital clues as to how the collision occurred. Jamie had been driving a BMW 3 Series at the time of the crash while Eileen was at the wheel of a Fiat Fiorino van.

Sergeant Alasdair MacKay, from the Road Policing Unit in Dingwall, said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Eileen and Jamie. Our enquiries into this incident are continuing and I would re-appeal to any witnesses of the crash, or anyone who may have observed the vehicles before it occurred, to please contact us.

“I would also ask motorists with any dash-cams who were travelling on the A82 shortly before the crash, to please check your footage for anything of significance that could assist our investigation.”

Anyone with information should call Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 3181 of 18 August.

The A82 is one of Scotland's most infamous roads. As a tourist favourite, with breath-taking scenery and a route that includes filming locations for the likes of Bond flick Skyfall, it is also one of Scotland's most dangerous routes, with some of the highest rates of fatal and serious crashes in the country.
