"Final Fantasy 14" is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, giving players another way to experience Square Enix's massively popular MMORPG. However, those planning to explore Eorzea on Nintendo's latest console may want to check their available storage first.
The upcoming Switch 2 version reportedly requires a substantial 117.2GB of space, which would take up nearly half of the system's 256GB internal storage.
'Final Fantasy 14' Switch 2 File Size Revealed
According to the Nintendo eShop listing, "Final Fantasy 14" is scheduled to launch on Switch 2 on August 4 with an install size of 117.2GB. That is a considerable requirement for a console with 256GB of built-in storage, leaving players with significantly less space for other games, downloadable content, and applications.
The Switch 2 version is also notably larger than the PlayStation 5 edition, which reportedly benefits from more advanced compression technology. Its file size is closer to the PC version, although the hefty download is understandable given the scale of "Final Fantasy 14" and the enormous amount of content added to the MMO over the years.
Players with limited internal storage may therefore want to prepare a compatible microSD Express card before installing the game. Doing so could make it easier to manage the game's large footprint while leaving the console's internal storage available for other titles.
Five 'Final Fantasy 14' Expansions Included
The large download does come with a significant benefit. The 117.2GB package reportedly includes all five existing "Final Fantasy 14" expansions: Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail.
For newcomers, this means a huge amount of content will be available without requiring separate downloads for each expansion. Players can experience years of story content, explore numerous regions, take on countless quests, and progress through the game's extensive endgame offerings from a single installation.
The file size could increase further as Square Enix continues expanding the MMO. A sixth expansion, Evercold, is reportedly in development and is expected to arrive next January, potentially adding even more content to an already massive game.
Square Enix Continues to Push Switch 2 Storage Limits
Before the MMO, "Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth" reportedly held the record for the largest individual game download on the console at 91.8GB, IGN wrote.
The publisher also has a particularly large game collection in the form of the "Kingdom Hearts Collection," which reportedly requires around 131GB of storage for its three included titles.
Free Month Planned for Switch 2 Launch
The Switch 2 release date was confirmed by Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida during Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin. The announcement was accompanied by details about the MMO's upcoming plans, including an introductory offer for Switch 2 players.
To help manage server demand during the game's first month, the Switch 2 version will reportedly be available without a subscription fee during its initial launch period.
Once that promotional window ends, players will need to subscribe through Final Fantasy 14's standard payment model to continue accessing the game.
