F1 star demands Spa-Francorchamps change with impassioned plea after death of racer, 18

Lance Stroll called for changes to the Spa-Francorchamps track after an 18-year-old died at the historic circuit on Saturday.

Dilano van't Hoff was competing in the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine when he was involved in the fatal crash. In the wet weather, he span after contact with another car.

Sat in his car in the middle of the track, he was then hit hard by another car at high speed who did not see he was there because of the thick spray until it was too late.

It was an eerily similar incident to the one which claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert in 2019. The Frenchman was also hit by another car after being left stricken in the middle of the track at the top of Eau Rouge.

This incident which killed Van't Hoff took place a few hundred metres further up the Kemmel Straight. But Stroll feels that section of the track is simply too dangerous and, speaking after the Austrian Grand Prix Sprint on Saturday, called for changes.

"A quick word for Dilano in Spa," the Aston Martin began as he faced the media after the session. "It's a tragic day for motorsport – we lost a driver today. I just want everyone to think about that. My thoughts are with him today.

"It breaks my heart what happened and I think Eau Rouge at Spa needs some looking into because we've lost two drivers now in four or five years. It's a really dangerous corner and we say it every year. It's not fair what happened today.

"That corner has to change. It's way too dangerous and every time we go through there it's an accident waiting to happen. Today it did happen again and we lost a young kid. It's not fair."

Asked if he and his fellow F1 drivers have any power to lobby for changes to the circuit, a visibly emotional Stroll added: "We have to talk about it, two drivers in the span of four or five years.

"That corner needs some changing. I just wanted to say that out loud before getting into my race because that's been in the back of my mind today. A sad day for racing."
