Former NBA coach George Karl and former NBA star Carmelo Anthony have a longstanding feud that appears to have been reignited recently by some podcast comments, and the pettiness is alive and well.
On Monday, Karl wished Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić a happy birthday, as the two-time NBA MVP turned 29, and Karl used the opportunity to take a swipe at Anthony, whom he coached in Denver.
“Happy bday to the champ, the ultimate team guy and the greatest player to wear #15 in Denver hoops history,” Karl wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Karl made sure to tag Anthony, a 10-time All-Star who also wore No. 15 for the Nuggets, in the picture to get his attention.

Just three days earlier, Karl had responded to Anthony’s recollection of their first-ever encounter in 2005 when he took over the Nuggets. In the NSFW clip from the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, Anthony said Karl called him “overrated” and saw his role on this team as similar to Detlef Schrempf’s. Karl coached Schrempf while the two were with the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1990s. Schrempf was a three-time All Star and two-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
“Hey @carmeloanthony let’s not do this,” Karl wrote on X. “You’re telling stories that are 20 years old. Let’s move fwd And u were overrated and u wish your game was as efficient as Detlef’s.”
