Exciting Everton defender leaves Blues mid-season with new club lined up

Exciting defender Mathew Mallon has left Everton and is set to sign for Blackburn Rovers in July. The 18-year-old was a prominent member of the club's under-18s setup under Paul Tait and had broken through into the under-23s side on a number of occasions.

The right-back made his debut for David Unsworth's side in March 2021, coming off the bench in a Premier League 2 match against Arsenal to provide an assist in a 1-1 draw - playing at right-midfield in that game. He made a further three appearances at that level that term, but didn't play for the U23s this term.

Mallon has spent this term with the U18s, captaining the side on a number of occasions and also playing every match of their FA Youth Cup run, which was ended by Manchester United at Old Trafford in February.

David Unsworth truth emerges after Everton 'gamble' claim

Unsworth will always be a great Evertonian, he doesn’t need to be an employee of the club to confirm that, but there are times in football when you have to move on.

We’re told that the 48-year-old is departing his position as Everton’s academy director and Under-23s head coach to pursue his ambition of becoming a first-team manager and that has to be applauded.

Given his age and experience, it would seem like Unsworth has decided it’s now or never for him in this respect and is making the bold decision to step away from the security of his role looking after the youngsters at Finch Farm to the most-ruthless and pressurised position in professional football.

Back in February 2018, he was granted permission by Everton to speak to League One Oxford United and the Daily Mirror went as far as reporting that his appointment was set to be confirmed.
