Barbie Ferreira has announced that she has quit hit HBO show Euphoria after starring in its first two seasons.

The 25-year-old played the much-loved Kat Hernandez on the series, a previously insecure student who discovered an unstoppable inner confidence following a dramatic character transformation after participating in online sex work.

Ferreira was introduced as one of several main characters in Euphoria’s first season, alongside global star Zendaya, before she was seen in more of a supporting role in the second.

The actress and model confirmed her exit from the show as she posted a photo of a drawing of her character Kat by co-star Hunter Schafer on Instagram Stories on Wednesday, August 24.

Ferreira wrote: “After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye,” the message began.

“I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today.

“I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you, Katherine Hernandez.”

Ferreira’s announcement comes as fans were left unhappy with her reduced presence in Euphoria’s second season, which aired at the beginning of the year.

Rumours surfaced at the time that Ferreira and show creator Sam Levinson had not got along during the making of the second season, as Ferreira reportedly didn’t agree with Levinson’s wish to see Kat battle an eating disorder, and she was almost written out as a result.

Ferreira did not attend the season two premiere of Euphoria, fuelling truth to the rumours.

The star did not address the speculation as she spoke to Evening Standard back in March. However, she did respond to fans’ negative reaction over Kat’s lessened portrayal on the show.

Ferreira said: “I love the show, I love my character, but I also can do other things. So, hopefully, there’s more complex characters in my future and Kat’s storyline is not disappointing for anybody next season.”

Kat was a character celebrated for bringing diverse representations of body types and self-image to Euphoria, and will no doubt be missed by viewers.

Ferreira will still be kept busy following her departure from the show as she continues to model and act, starring as the new face of YSL Beauty and appearing in Nope, which is currently showing in cinemas.
