Erik ten Hag told how much Manchester United need to pay to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham

Manchester United should put aside £100m to sign Harry Kane and boost their Premier League ambitions.

That's the message from Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson, who reckons Erik ten Hag needs the England captain to compete with Manchester City and his former side, Arsenal, for the title next season. United were beaten by the table-topping Gunners on their trip to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

In that game, summer signing Antony was among those criticised for his performance, while Merson outlined his arrival as a marker for what it might cost to lure Kane to Old Trafford next season. He only has 18 months to run on his contract, but the Tottenham striker would be keen to sit down to discuss an extension.

United, meanwhile, continue to monitor his situation. Along with Victor Osimhen from Napoli, the 29-year-old has been earmarked as a possible long-term successor for Cristiano Ronaldo - who left the club for the second time under controversial circumstances in November.

Writing about Kane in his latest Sky Sports column, Merson said: "He's the best centre-forward in the world. If I'm Manchester United, I'm spending £100m on Kane tomorrow.

"They just paid £80m for Antony and he won't score as many goals in 10 years as Kane would score in a season for Manchester United. Kane can play until he's 37, because he doesn't have to have pace, his game's not about pace, he's got the brain, he can come short, find the passes and score the goals.

"He has everything. If Manchester United want to be anywhere near winning a title, they need a Kane. Seeing them against Arsenal, they're a long way off still."

Aside from loan spells in his younger years, Kane has spent his entire club career with Tottenham, while he grabbed his 266th goal for them against Fulham on Monday night, moving him level with record goalscorer Jimmy Greaves, who amassed the same tally between 1961 and 1970.
