England manager Sarina Wiegman has revealed Chelsea youngster Lauren James has been on her radar ever since she took charge of the Lionesses last year.

James, who is the sister of England right-back Reece, is currently uncapped by England at senior level but was on Wednesday called up for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Luxembourg.

The 20-year-old forward has long been tipped for a big future and she left Manchester United last summer to join Chelsea.

James struggled for minutes during her first campaign with the Blues, but she has had a good pre-season and Wiegman has revealed that she has been keeping tabs on the youngster ever since she was appointed by England last year.

“We have been following her for a long time. We have been following her since I came in and my former colleagues [were following her],” she said.

“She didn’t play that much [last season], but she did play some games. We know she’s a very talented player.

“She did work over the summer, she also had a very good preparation with Chelsea, played minutes, so I think we want to give her a chance to show what she can do with the national team.”
