Elon Musk becomes world's first trillionaire, but lives in a 20x20-foot home with an almost empty fridge

Elon Musk has made history by becoming the world's first trillionaire, yet his lifestyle remains surprisingly modest. Despite amassing an estimated fortune of $1.1 trillion following SpaceX's blockbuster stock market debut, the billionaire entrepreneur reportedly lives in a compact 400-square-foot home near SpaceX's Starbase facility in Texas.

SpaceX IPO propels Musk to trillionaire status

Musk crossed the trillionaire milestone on June 12, 2026, largely due to the highly successful public listing of SpaceX. The aerospace company debuted on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol SPCX, selling around 556 million shares at $135 each and raising nearly $75 billion in what became the largest IPO in stock market history.

Following its debut, SpaceX shares surged to as high as $176 before settling near $161, pushing the company's valuation beyond $2 trillion. The rally significantly boosted Musk's wealth, adding to the value of his large stakes in both SpaceX and Tesla.

Billionaire fortune, tiny home

While Musk's wealth has reached unprecedented levels, his choice of residence has continued to attract attention. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has long claimed that his primary residence is a small prefabricated home in Boca Chica, Texas, close to SpaceX's launch operations.

In a 2021 post, Musk said, "My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica/Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It's kinda awesome though."

The house, manufactured by Boxabl, measures just 20 feet by 20 feet, offering about 400 square feet of living space. It includes a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and small living area.

'No food in the fridge'

The simplicity of Musk's home has been highlighted by both family members and biographers. In 2023, biographer Walter Isaacson described the residence as a "Spartan" home and shared images of its interior.

Musk's mother, Maye Musk, also offered a glimpse into the billionaire's minimalist lifestyle after visiting the property. She remarked that there was "no food in the fridge" and noted the sparse living conditions, including a garage sleeping area and just a single towel in the bathroom.

A focus on work over luxury

Musk has often said he prefers spending money on ambitious projects rather than lavish personal possessions. Throughout his career, he has become known for his intense work habits, including sleeping on factory floors during critical production periods at Tesla.

His modest Texas home stands in stark contrast to the immense fortune that now makes him the wealthiest person in history, underscoring a lifestyle centered more on work and engineering than luxury living.
