Ellen Keane's participation in this years World Para Swimming Championships has been thrown into doubt after a positive covid test.
Keane, the 2020 Paralympic Champion, tested positive for covid today and faces a race to be fit in time to compete when the championships begin in 17 days time.
Announcing the news on Twitter, Keane expressed her desire to be ready to race when the tournament kicks off on June 12th.
"Hello… little update for you all," Keane's post begins.
"So after managing to avoid it for 2 years, successfully getting through Tokyo & DWTS, I finally got covid. It was inevitable that it was going to happen but with 17 days to go until world championships it is not an ideal situation."
Keane continues, "I’m working closely (but virtually) with my para team and following the advice from my doctor.
"I’m hoping to still be able to compete at worlds but ultimately I need to take it easy right now so I don’t risk making myself sicker."
Keane has experienced remarkable success in her career to date. In 2008, she became Ireland's youngest ever Paralympian at just 13 years of age, and has won medals at European, World and Paralympic Championships. Whether she is able to add to her tally this year, depends on how quickly she can recover from her positive covid test.
