Eight alternative Edinburgh date ideas for couples seeking Valentine's Day fun

With Valentine's Day on its way, couples in the capital may be looking for more interesting ways to spice up their date nights around the most romantic day of the year.

And with most probably bored of the usual ideas such as a traditional candle-lit dinner for two or a trip to the cinema together, and with times a bit tight for an extravagant day or two away together, we've come up with a few ideas of alternative date nights to enjoy some quality time together.

So forget the usual boring nights out, here are some more exciting ways to impress your significant other.

Take on axe throwing at Boom Battle Bar or Black Axe

Get competitive at Boom Battle Bar (Boom Battle Bar)

For some serious competitiveness then you can't go wrong with a bit of axe-throwing. Head to the dedicated spot Black Axe Throwing Co. and go a little primal together.

The urban axe-throwing venue is even offering a free cocktail on arrival this Valentine’s Day, making it the ideal alternative date night location.

Or if you want to mix it up, for just £25 per person, couples can enjoy three competitive games at Boom Battle Bar, including Bavarian Axe Throwing, Augmented Reality Darts and Shuffleboard, testing their competitive nature and having plenty of fun together at the same time.

Have a laugh together at the Stand Comedy Club

With a range of gigs throughout the month to the 14th and beyond, the Stand is the ideal way to share a laugh together.

With top home-grown and international comics aplenty and prices that won't break the bank (tickets start from £8) it's an ideal way to spend the evening together. And should you not be in the spirit of the occasion they are even hosting an Anti-Valentines event with comics like Marjolein Robertson and Stu and Garry.

Game together at Wings or NQ64

The Arcades in NQ64 (www.carlopaloni.co.uk)

Edinburgh is home to two top-notch arcade gaming bars in Wings and NQ64 in the Merchant City, with both offering something different in terms of fun.

While NQ64 would suit a more raucous night out, with neon graffitied gaming and cocktails, Wings is more cosy and ideal for couples looking to get a little closer and enjoy some delicious food.

Enjoy Bowling at Lane 7

While bowling is what Lane 7 is famous for you'll be bowled over (sorry), by the sheer scope of amazing things you can do in this incredible venue with pool, darts, crazy golf, water pong, shuffleboard and shooting pods all part of the fun.

Go head to head at Fore Play (Mini golf)

Fore Play takes mini-golf to the next level with plenty of innovative holes of fun that are both challenging and Instagram-worthy moments where whoever gets the best score between you will probably come second to grabbing a thrilling photograph together to share with friends.

Don't forget there are plenty of great drinks on offer too with their well-stocked bar to enjoy afterwards.

Make a sweet treat together with the Chocolatarium

This is one of Edinburgh's top attractions and for a good reason, for couples who love to enjoy a sweet treat or two.

Ideal for learning all about how this wonderful treat is made, the micro chocolate factory on Cranston Street, just off the Royal Mile, offers a fun tour that's reasonably priced and a great way to while away a romantic afternoon together making chocolate.

Learn all about Scotland's hottest trending spirit and enjoy a wee G & T

56 North is Edinburgh's original gin bar and it is home to a truly astounding collection of bottles of the juniper spirit to try.

Not only that but the expert team here make their own South Loch Gin and they'll be happy to show you around with a tasting and masterclass and if you are both feeling adventurous you can even enjoy a selection of 'Guided Scottish Gins paired with cheeses' tasting.

Big kids will love Camera Obscura

Should you feel a little more playful, the answer could lie in one of the city's older visitor attractions, Camera Obscura.

This hidden gem fun house is a 'World of Illusions' with five floors jam-packed with over 100 interactive exhibits, just don't forget to head to the roof for an unrivalled view of the city.
