An Edinburgh local who recently visited Edinburgh Zoo was left “disillusioned” after spotting empty cages.
Leaving a two-star review on Tripadvisor, Downdie wrote that they had fond memories of the popular attraction being “a fantastic place" after visiting a long time ago.
But on their most recent visit this month, they claimed "most of the cages and enclosures appeared empty." They added “Now, I realise that some animals are difficult to see, but our two children were bored when they couldn’t see anything. No elephants and no aquarium now was another disappointment.”

Although the kids missed out on seeing most of the animals, Bertie the penguin saved the day by “playing” with them.
Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo replied to the reviewer, explaining some of the animals may have been looking for some "peace and quiet."
They added: "Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're sorry you left feeling disillusioned but we are glad that Bertie could save the day for the kids!”
Addressing the apparent lack of animals, Edinburgh Zoo staff posted: "Each of our 2,500 amazing animals has access to outdoor, indoor and private areas should they want some peace and quiet… we always recommend visiting different animals at various points during your visit for the best chance of seeing them.”
Downdie also complained about the food outlets, saying that hardly any of them were open with one of their only options being ice cream.
She posted: “£10 for two Cornettos and two small tubs of ice cream also seemed excessive given it is not cheap entry fees.”
In response the zoo wrote “As a wildlife conservation charity, every ticket for entry and purchase at our food outlets or shop help create a world where nature is protected, valued and loved and helps towards our goals of reversing the decline of at least 50 species by 2030.”
Edinburgh Zoo has an average Tripadvisor rating of four stars and has received more than 3,800 excellent reviews.
