Edinburgh tenement being rebuilt after tragic gas explosion in which man died

Work is under way on a building that was wrecked by a tragic gas explosion that killed one person in Edinburgh.

The Fountainbridge tenement building was the scene of a heartbreaking gas explosion in which Gordon Sievewright, 69, died on Tuesday September 10.

The incident left many without a home and also destroyed several belongings of the residents that inhabited the building.

But pictures have emerged showing the site of the gas blast surrounded by walls of scaffolding.

Paul Motion, who captured the images, said: “It appears the Fountainbridge tenement badly damaged in the fatal gas explosion and fire a few years back is being rebuilt.”

It is understood that the private owners and their insurance companies have hired a project manager to oversee the reinstatement of what was left of the building into a tenement.

From the images shared with Edinburgh Live, the former tenement building looks as though it is having extensive work carried out so that it can again be turned into a block of flats for Edinburgh residents.

On Tuesday 10, September 2019, police and other emergency services rushed to the scene of an incident at around 5pm after reports of an explosion in the Fountainbirdge four-storey building, which led to debris raining down on nearby streets.

Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service battled the flames and carried out a detailed search of the building. During this search, Mr Sievewright was found dead within the second floor.

However, due to the damaged state of the building, no recovery of his body could take place at the time and a later recovery effort was made by emergency services after Edinburgh City Council contractors demolished a considerable portion of the building.

As a result of the blast, neighbouring Tollcross Primary was forced to close for several days whilst the area was secured.
