Edinburgh sex offender went on horror knife rampage and abducted student after jail release

A dangerous sex offender went on a horror knife rampage and abducted a judo student in her car one month after being freed from jail.

Kenneth Gibson had earlier attacked two undercover police officers and a German tourist in a sickening night of violence. The 35-year-old thug told the carjacking victim Liere de la Fuente he would stab her with a lock knife before she bravely fought back.

A judge at the High Court in Edinburgh said it was “a hugely concerning case” as he examined Gibson’s record, noting that he reoffended so quickly after leaving prison. Gibson was previously jailed for eight years in 2005 for abducting and raping a 14-year-old schoolboy, reports the Record.

He forced the boy off a bus in Edinburgh city centre after threatening to stab him, took him to a lane and repeatedly punched him before carrying out the sex attack. The court was told he has repeatedly offended during periods of release from jail.

In the most recent case, Gibson admitted assaulting detective constables Kyle Crawford and Victoria Shaw on April 21 this year at Salvation Army premises at the Pleasance, in Edinburgh, by approaching them, threatening them with violence and brandishing a knife at them.

He escaped then and then assaulted and attempted to abduct German tourist, Andreas Stemberg, 60, at nearby St Mary’s Street by seizing him, threatening to take him hostage and brandishing the weapon at him.

Gibson further pled guilty to abducting and assaulting judo expert Ms de la Fuente a short time later by entering her vehicle in Viewcraig Gardens, presenting the knife at her, demanding she drive him away, threatening to stab her and struggling violently with her on the same date.

Advocate depute David Dickson told the court: “The accused is assessed as a very high risk registered sex offender.”

“He was released from HMP Edinburgh on March 21 2022. He was served with a copy of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and a copy of Sexual Offences Notification Requirements,” said the prosecutor.

Defence counsel Fred Mackintosh KC said although Gibson was a high risk sex offender but the latest offences were non-sexual. Sentence was deferred on Gibson, who is currently in Dumfries prison, for the preparation of reports and he was remanded in custody.
