Edinburgh is well known for its variety of takeaways, but nothing compares to a good fish and chips.

Whether you're looking for a late-night snack after an evening out, or a quick bite to eat after work, there are plenty of chippies around the city to check out.

To look into what fish and chip shops in the centre of Edinburgh are most — and least — popular amongst customers, we took to TripAdvisor.

The lowest-rated chippy on this list is Deep Sea Fish and Chips on Antigua Street. While some TripAdvisor reviewers gave praise to its "amazing" pizza, others criticised its customer service and "rubbery" fish.

What one customer said: "Wanted to try a fish supper in Edinburgh. Chips were fine. Fish had been sitting under the glass counter for who knows how long, was hard and more batter than fish. Ain't going back."

Cafe Piccante, 19 Broughton Street

Out of all the chippies on this list, Cafe Piccante has the most one-out-of-five ratings, with customers criticising its "overpriced" food and "shocking" service. However, others praised its "friendly" staff.

What one customer said: "My wife and I popped in for a fish supper to share after a night out. I was amazed by the tiny portion for the expensive price. The only saving grace was that one only bought one fish supper instead of two. Can't see me rushing back."

Zara Fast Foods Pizza & Burger House, 56 Blackfriars Street

Anyone who has been for a night out on the Cowgate will likely have stopped by Zara Fast Foods at least once for some food on the way home. Out of 10 reviews, the most recent ones have been largely positive — praising its "good food" and "beautiful views".

What one customer said: "Had a tasty lunch here - pitta with houmous. Perfect easy lunch time food. The views of the Castle were breathtaking. Nice casual atmosphere."

Castle Rock Chip Shop, 87 Grassmarket

What one customer said: "Got a takeaway from here while staying at a nearby hotel. Fish was cooked fresh which meant a wee wait but was more than worth it as was delicious. Guy who served us was so polite and friendly so would recommend a visit here if not looking for an expensive meal out and just want to take back to your hotel room."

The City Restaurant, 35 Nicolson Street

Coming it an number one is The City Restaurant on Nicolson Street, which customers called "lovely" and "a really amazing experience". Unlike most of the other fish and chip shops on this list, The City Restaurant has plenty of seating if you want a proper sit down meal.

What one customer said: "Really amazing experience ! The fish and chips are really great as well as the Scottish breakfasts ! You should go for a taste of Great Britain!"
