Edinburgh restaurant threatens to call police on diner who won't pay over complaint

A Haymarket eatery has hit back at a TripAdvisor review, in which a customer claimed it was the ‘most insulting experience’ of their life.

After dining at The Khukuri Restaurant on West Maitland Street, the customer was quick to head online and bash his visit - and the establishment. Claiming that the Nepalese eatery threatened to call the police on them, the review also hits out at the ‘inedible’ food, sh**hole toilets and limited seating time.

The review also claimed that the customer was now blacklisted from The Khukuri.

The full review said: “The most insulting experience of my 30 years of eating out. I got threatened with the police all because I refused to pay for an inedible main course.

“I agreed to pay for the rest but not for one of the main courses that I’d previously complained about. The manager said it was because I’d already eaten one prawn and a piece of chicken before the completely indelible lamb and raw onions and other uncooked veg.

“This was on the back of being told that we must finish our meal within an hour as they were really busy. We hadn’t even sat down by this point.

“Needless to say I asked the manager to please call the police, as no way on gods earth was I paying. Apparently I am now blacklisted and not welcome back.

“This made me eventually laugh at the delusions of the main. Don’t even get me started on the sh**hole downstairs they call toilets.”

Not long after the disparaging review was posted, the team at Khukuri were quick to respond and set the record straight. Their response reads: “Normally we don’t have any problems in accepting our mistake.

“We can’t get everything right every single time and we are aware of this. The dish you complained about, mixed grill, is one of our most expensive dishes on the menu.

“It consists of lamb chop, king prawn, chicken tikka, tandoori chicken and lamb tikka. When you complained about the so-called inedible meal you had eaten everything except the lamb tikka, so we felt it was unfair for you to refuse to pay for the entire dish.

“We would have happily offered you something on the house, if you hadn’t been shouting and swearing at our staff. We understand that you were out with your group to have a great time but that doesn’t mean going around swearing and being abusive to others.

“The only reason we didn’t call the police is because we didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere for our other diners. We served more than several portions of our mixed grill last night without a single complaint.

“With regards to the one and a half hour time limit, this is normal for all establishments serving food and drinks around Haymarket. This is simply because it is very busy and we won’t be able to cope with demand if we don't put a time limit.”

The Khukuri has an average rating of four and a half stars on TripAdvisor, with 986 reviews to date. Of these, 727 branded the eatery ‘excellent’ while only 20 said it was ‘terrible’.

A recent review, which gave the restaurant five stars, said: “Food is very well prepared and portion sizes generous. Service attentive and charming.

“If you want to escape the noise and overcrowded feeling of the city centre, then this place offers an oasis of calm.”
