Edinburgh pub apologises to English tourist after waitress 'rolls her eyes'

An Edinburgh pub has apologised after an English tourist hit out at the venue online following their visit earlier this month.

The Beehive Inn had reached out to the individual on TripAdvisor following their experience at the historic Edinburgh pub, after they were left waiting over an hour for their food.

Arriving for a 70th birthday meal, the group said they had booked a table for 8pm, but following their initial drinks order, were left for over an hour without their meals.

Ordering to one initial waitress, the review explained that their ordered seemed to have disappeared, and were forced to speak to a different member of staff before eventually being served their dinner at 9.20pm.

Speaking on TripAdvisor, the diner, from Newcastle, said: "In the afternoon, we booked a table for eight because it was my mum’s 70th birthday and everywhere else was booked out.

We arrived promptly at eight and was shown to a table. We ordered our drinks then waited and waited and waited for them to take our food order. I called the waitress over and told her we were ready to order our food so she took it, but didn’t write it down.

"By 9.10pm we still hadn’t got our food so I called the waitress over again (a different lady) and she asked us if we had ordered. I pointed to the reserved 8pm sign and told her we had sat for over an hour. She said she would find out, but then didn’t come back to us to tell us anything! Instead, she went back behind the bar and ignored us.

"I then called the original lady over who said our food was coming soon, but did not apologise. Finally, we were served our food at 9.20pm. The waitresses had a bad attitude. They rolled their eyes when we complained and did not apologise or try to reassure us. They couldn’t care less."

But the reviewer admitted their experience got a little better after they were approached by another member of staff.

They posted: "When we were eating, another waitress asked us if our food was ok so we told her we had waited an hour and 20 mins for food. She apologised and gave us a free round of drinks. This was nice of her, but we were already annoyed at the lack of service or curtesy shown by the other staff. My mum was upset as this was a big birthday and it had been a very disappointing experience. Please train your staff in customer service."

Responding to the complaint, the Beehive were quick to apologise for the experience, and urged the customer to understand this was not their "usual standard."

A reply from the pub read: "We are sorry to hear about your experience with us. This is not our usual standard and although it seems we tried to rectify the situation, we understand it might have been too little too late.

"We would love for you to get in touch with us privately to provide more detail."

The Beehive has an average TripAdvisor rating of 3.5 stars and has attracted hundreds of excellent and very good reviews.
