Edinburgh barbers announce plans to open new Leith branch in abandoned pet shop

An Edinburgh barber is moving their new branch into a Leith pet shop as they tell locals to “keep their eyes peeled for developments.”

Stag barbers currently has two different branches in Edinburgh, their original on Lady Lawson Street and another in Haymarket. Now, Leith locals can expect another to open on their doorstep as the company announces their expansion to Duke Street.

The new location will be in the closed shops “Pets and Things” which has been shuttered for more than a decade, after closing in 2008.

Posting the announcement to their social media, the company said they have been looking at this shop for a long time, calling it “the perfect location for our Leith outpost.”

The announcement came to the delight of locals, with one person commenting: “Oh my god, so exciting! Finally a Stag close to home!”

Unlike more traditional barbers, The Stag Barber co charge their prices based on hair length, rather than gender, so as to be more inclusive and allow people better access to their services.

With a senior stylist, their prices range from £37 for really short hair to £52 for long hair.

Posting on their social media, the group said: “We are over the moon to announce that we have bought the iconic Pets n Things at 146 Duke Street.

“Murray and I literally live on this street so we’ve been eyeing up this shop for a long time, sandwiched between two of our fave businesses Nauticus and Twelve Triangles, as the perfect location for our Stag Leith outpost. So when it came up for sale we tried everything in our ability to get it.

“It certainly hasn’t been easy. But the pandemic brought a lot of things to light for us and I think importantly it made us think about securing a long term future for our team. We rent our two other premises and received no rent relief while closed for 5 months at a time. It was scary at the best of times. We also don’t own our own home. We want to promise our team a safe, good career and that we are here for the long term. Stag is no flash in the pan. We are here to stay.

Honestly it feels really good to be investing in our team and the Stag dream.

“Thank you to our incredible team and our clients for always believing in us. We truly feel we are at the beginning of something incredible.

Keep your eyes peeled for developments and a much awaited opening party”
