Easton's existing AX range of gravel wheels are primarily aimed at adventuring and general gravel riding. However, to compliment the high speeds frequently seen in gravel racing these days, Easton has added a new aero addition to the EC90 range.
The EC90 ALX will be Easton's best gravel wheel for racing, sporting a new 36mm deep carbon rim and laced to Easton Vault hubs.
Compared to some of Easton's road wheelsets, that 36mm rim depth doesn't sound all that deep. Rather than use a stiff deep section rim, Easton says careful consideration was made when selecting the depth to find a balance between aerodynamics, weight, ride quality, and stability.
Easton claims the combination of 36mm deep and 24mm inner rim width offers an aerodynamic advantage when used with wide gravel tires compared to shallower rims. The rims have a hookless design and Easton recommends using tires between 33mm and 50mm wide.
Easton has paired the rims with its Vault hubs used on the road bike wheels which are derived from the MTB hubs used on Race Face's Era wheelset.
The hubs feature wide-set bearings for better handle power transfer and improved durability. The 60 points of engagement should give a snappy pick-up and freehubs have a reverse-drive ring mechanism which is claimed to improve high torque loads.
The wheels are built up using alloy nipples and 24 Sapim CX-Ray per wheel. Easton states that the wheelset weighs in at 1,492g. Easton's claimed weight is competitive compared to similar aero gravel wheelsets like Hunt's 42 Limitless Gravel Aero (1,548g), Reserve 40|44 GR (1,444g), and Zipp's 303 Firecrest (1,410g). It's also only 22g heavier than Easton's shallow 21mm deep EC90 AX gravel wheels.
Easton EC90 ALX wheelset specs and pricing
They only come in 700c sizing and with Centerlock brake rotor compatibility, but can be specced with XD, Microspline, or HG11 freehubs.
