Eastern Freeway in Mumbai named after ex-CM Vilasrao Deshmukh

MUMBAI: The Eastern Freeway in Mumbai has been named after late chief minister and Congress leader Vilasrao Deshmukh. A notification was issued by the state urban development in this regard on Thursday.

A decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting in 2020 that the road would be named after Deshmukh. This was done to acknowledge Deshmukh’s contribution to the project. The project was inaugurated by then chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

The 16.8-km Eastern Freeway connects P D’Mello Road in South Mumbai to the Eastern Express Highway in Chembur. An official said that now that the notification has been issued, the BMC will start putting up signages with the official name. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority constructed the road and has handed over the project to the BMC.
