The Department for Work and Pension (DWP) has confirmed that people claiming Universal Credit will receive the 10.1 per cent uprating in benefit payments due from Tuesday, May 16. State Pension and most benefits increased on April 10 as part of the annual uprating exercise, but due to payments made in arrears, the new rates will not land in accounts until this month.
Minister for Employment Guy Opperman MP, was asked by Labour MP Dame Nia Griffith whether the uprating “was paid to claimants in their April benefit payment”. In a written response earlier this week, he explained: “Increases in Universal Credit come into force from the start of the first assessment period beginning on or after the first Monday of the tax year.
“As Universal Credit is a calendar monthly assessed benefit that is paid monthly in arrears, a claimant will receive their uprated benefit award in payments due from 16 May.”
