Dundee United are on the verge of being relegated after a 3-0 trouncing at home to Kilmarnock leaves them sitting three points and eight goals adrift of safety.
The Tangerines will almost certainly return to the Championship after a dismal season is set to end with them bottom of the Premiership pile. To make matters worse for the Terrors, city rivals and very near neighbours Dundee are set to replace them in the top flight as Tannadice Street sees a role reversal ahead of next season. Ross County almost condemned them tonight but a late St Johnstone leveller means it goes to final day.
Jim Goodwin's appointment to replace the sacked Liam Fox hasn't worked after United burned through three bosses in an attempt to beat the drop. Jack Ross was dismissed at the end of August after a 9-0 home humiliation against Celtic. That proved to be the final straw for the board after the former Hibs boss had also overseen a 7-1 aggregate hammering to AZ in the Europa Conference League qualifiers. No. 2 Liam Fox made the step up to the top job, but suffered a similar fate following a 4-0 thumping by relegation rivals Ross County, which capped off a horror run of form for the former Hearts coach.
Goodwin was brought in to try and arrest the slide, despite suffering a national embarrassment in charge of Aberdeen when non-league Darvel dumped the Dons out of the Scottish Cup. hammerings from Hearts and Hibs respectively eventually saw is Pittodrie tenure brought to an end.
He looked to have given United a fighting chance at survival. But successive defeats to St Johnstone, County again and Livingston saw them rooted to the bottom ahead of the crunch Killie clash. And it was Derek McInnes who all-but consigned his former club to the second tier after wiping the floor with United at Tannadice.
