Duncan Ferguson buys drinks for Everton fans ahead of Aston Villa match

Duncan Ferguson showed his class, ahead of his first game in charge as caretaker boss.

Ferguson was appointed on a temporary basis for the Blues’ “upcoming games”, following the departure of Rafa Benitez.

A club legend, Ferguson is already one of the most popular figures among Everton fans and the Scotsman enjoyed success during his previous short stint in the dugout in December 2019.

A 3-1 victory over Chelsea, along with draws against Manchester United and Arsenal, stabilised the Everton ship, prior to the appointment of Carl Ancelotti.

However, as Everton prepared for their game against Aston Villa at Goodison this weekend, Ferguson was eager that Blues fans were in high spirits, ahead of kick-off.

The Winslow Hotel on Goodison Road tweeted on Saturday: “Massive big thanks to the legend that is Duncan Ferguson for buying all our customers their first drink this morning. Amazing generous gesture, that's a measure of the man. COYB.”

This was followed by claims that the former Scotland striker had done the same thing nearby at The Brick on County Road.

Ferguson’s efforts to show appreciation to the supporters were in keeping with his earlier message to the Everton squad about the levels of passion expected at the club.

When asked what he had tried to get across to the players during his first week in charge, Ferguson replied : "What's needed to be an Everton player, what the fans demand.

"That's what I'm banging on to them. In the past, it's not been good enough, but we need to show the fans what they're all about."

Asked if the squad had a better idea of what Everton fans expect of them after those discussions, "I think they do now,” he said.

"I think they should know [already] - but they know now, put it that way.”
