Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership plans 800 new affordable homes by 2026

A social housing organisation working hard to transform communities has revealed huge plans to build 800 affordable homes across the region by 2026.

Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership (DGHP) has ambitious plans for providing families with new-build homes – all of which will be for social rent.

And 89 of those homes are to be located at the former Currie European trucking depot in Locharbriggs after the council gave the thumbs up to DGHP’s detailed proposals to convert the site into a major mixed housing and retail development.

Tom Barclay, a director with Wheatley Group, DGHP’s parent company, said: “DGHP has ambitious plans to build 800 new homes for social rent by 2026.

“The approval of these 89 new homes at Locharbriggs is the latest step in our programme to transform communities and create much-needed, affordable housing in Dumfries.

“With our partners in the local authority we look forward to seeing work starting on these energy-efficient, family-friendly homes in the near future.

“Our new-build programme has already made a real and lasting difference to communities all over Scotland and the new homes we’re building will help transform the lives of those who live in them.”

Planning permission to transform the former Currie European trucking depot into a residential and shopping development was first granted by the council in May, 2018, and then extended to 2024 to allow the proposals to be developed further.

The ambitious proposals were back in front of the council’s planning committee last week when councillors were asked to approve specific conditions on layout, design, external appearance and landscaping.

They unanimously agreed to approve the plans, subject to conditions.
