A drug-resistant fungus that spreads in hospitals ended up on health care workers' gloves or gowns during 29% of routine patient care interactions in a new multicenter study, showing how easily Candida auris can move from one patient's bedside toward the next.
The study, published Sept. 8 in Open Forum Infectious Diseases, followed 109 patients colonized with C. auris at nine acute care hospitals in California, Illinois, Maryland and New York. Researchers cultured staff gloves and gowns after 1,083 interactions and found the fungus had transferred to nearly a third of them.
