Driver charged after crash, alleged assault of police officer

A man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting police, good Samaritans and frontline workers following a Kotara crash.

Officers were called to Charlestown Road at Kotara about 8.10pm on Wednesday, July 8, after reports of a crash.

They were told at the scene a utility had lost control and hit a parked vehicle before crashing through the fence of a home and into a tree.

Several members of the public stopped to help the driver of the ute.

It is alleged they were assaulted by the driver.

An officer and police dog attached to the dog unit arrived a short time later.

They were also allegedly assaulted by the driver.

Responding firefighters and paramedics helped police arrest a 33-year-old man at the scene.

He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment under police guard.

A senior constable was treated for cuts to his face, police said.

On Thursday, police attended the John Hunter Hospital to speak with the 33-year-old.

He was charged with seven offences. They include:

The 33-year-old had been refused bail to face court on Friday.
