Dr Michael Mosley names 4 foods to improve sleep and weight loss

Dr Michael Mosley has shared four foods that will help improve sleep and help with weight loss. According to the founder of the 5:2 diet, the better you sleep, the more likely you are you make healthier choices the next day.

A poor sleep quality means you will more likely gain weight. In his latest blog post, the diet guru said people often do not realise that what you eat could also have the biggest influence on your sleep quality.

He wrote: "While your quality of sleep evidently has an impact on what you eat, the same applies vice versa. Both the food we eat and our eating habits can influence our sleep patterns and behaviours."

Dr Mosley then highlighted the foods that are likely to help you sleep better, including oily fish, nuts, seeds and green vegetables, the Mirror reports. He wrote: "Oily fish is high in both omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, both of which have been recognised to increase levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin.

"Serotonin is later converted into melatonin, the sleep hormone. Nuts and seeds are high in magnesium. Magnesium, commonly referred to as the sleep mineral, helps to reduce adrenaline levels and relaxes the brain."

Speaking about green vegetables, Dr Mosley said these help with the production of melatonin. This naturally occurs in veg like broccoli, asparagus and cucumber.

It was previously reported that those wanting to aid weight loss could do so by cutting out a popular fruit. Bananas are not as beneficial as people may think as the diet guru said: "Fruit is great if you’re healthy but if you have weight to lose, then switching to less sugary fruits like apples and berries might be wise."

Citing a 2019 study, Dr Mosley revealed those who follow the Mediterranean diet, where these foods are recommended, get better sleep.

In the study, one group followed the Mediterranean diet and one didn't. Those who did were twice as likely to have good sleep than those who didn't.

In another recent post on his Fast 800 website, Dr Mosley highlighted five other foods that are good for those wanting to shed some weight.
